Top 10 Most Romantic Movies

Ok, this would be going off my usual marketing/politics/random brainiac blog posts but recently some friends and I got into a most lively discussion trying to agree on the top 10 most romantic movies in “our” lifetime. We each came up with 10 and slowly and painfully voted out movies by rational discussion followed by heated argument followed by majority vote. I’ll have you know that half of my movies made it on the final list (pat pat on the back).

So, after several bottles of wine, a gaggle of oohs and aahhhs, and reminiscing over some very great love scenes, here goes the list with the number one spot of the most romantic movie in the last 30 years going to a tie between the top two movies we split on. OK, so technically it's the top 11 movies....

THE LIST

  1. BBCs North and South [The tall, dark, and yummy Mr. Thornton and the sweet, seemingly impervious Margaret Hale – great chemistry – and when they finally kiss at the train depot, trust me - you’ll get familiar with the rewind button. This was one of my top 3; long but well worth the watch. The intensity in the way Mr. Thornton always looks at Margaret Hale – we all agreed - melting.]

  1. Titanic
  2. Atonement
  3. Moulin Rouge [So what if it’s a circus of onscreen ‘bizarre’, the romance between the penniless bohemian writer Christian and his sparkling courtesan Satine brings focus and intensity to the movie. The mushy love duets don’t hurt either.]
  4. Somewhere in Time [Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, two gorgeous people in a sweet time-travel romance. I absolutely loved this movie the first time I saw it 10-12 years ago on some obscure movie channel.]
  5. The English Patient
  6. The Notebook
  7. Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightley) [So it doesn’t exactly stay true to plot but who cares. The chemistry between Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy is still delish. The only real downside to this movie is the absence of a passionate kiss the moment Darcy professes his love for the second time. A hand kiss does this romance a disservice, but it still made my list.]
  8. Persuasion (BBC remake)
  9. Bridges of Madison County
  10. Pretty Woman [I prefer more drama-based romantic movies but I was over-ruled]
Top 5 Runner ups that almost made the list:
  1. Dirty Dancing

  2. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

  3. BBC Pride and Prejudice (with Collin Firth)

  4. When Harry Met Sally

  5. Ghost

Thoughts? Share ‘em if you got ‘em.

Crouching Tiger Hidden a romantic movie? I'll need to think about that one.

I'm trusting you on this and adding North and South to my Netfix queue.

Some very good choices. A few are a little too... something for me, but they are definitely romantic.

Did Mrs. Brown or Chocolat get any consideration?

Making dinner and I thought of 9 1/2 Weeks (can't imagine why). Was that on anyone's list?

CTHD is a romantic movie - though not traditionally romantic I'll agree. It's about unrequited love, new love, and lasting love silenced by tradition, duty and honor. At the end when Li Mu Bi is dying and finally he tells Michelle Yeoh's character how he feels - uh, it's heartbreaking but you felt their chemistry and affection throughout the movie. Because it wasn't a classic love romance movie, it didn't make the final list but it's got something..

No one mentioned Mrs. Brown - I've never seen it myself.

I did briefly consider Chocolat but felt it less a romantic love story and more of a magical story that had an undertone of romance, and not enough to overcome those on the list.

As for 91/2 weeks, someone did have it on their list. We had a gr-reat time talking about several "special" scenes but no - it never made the first cut.

What about these movies?
An Officer and a Gentleman
Roxanne
Runaway Bride
50 First Dates
Shakespeare In Love

an officer and a gentleman was on my list and shakespeare in love was a runner-up but we wantd to keep it ti just 5 and the others got more votes. Roxanne is cute but not enough of a romantic love story I think and the other two I think are too comedy - also the reason I voted against Pretty Woman.

There are a lot of good cute romantic movies but we were going for the real deep love stories that tug at you and leave you feeling like, WOW. I don't think PW qualifies but, I was overruled.

If you had to pick your top 3 most romantic films, which would they be?

The Princess Bride didn't make it? Inconceivable!

Ok, come on now... the Princess Bride???

Don't get me wrong - it's one of my all-time favs and I've seen it, well - alot. But one of the most romantic movies in the last 30 years? Hardly. When people think of the PB - they don't swoon with thoughts of romanticism but rather laugh over its witty sarcasm and nonsensical {yet oddly hysterical} lines like, "my name is inigo montoya. You killed my father; prepare to die!" Repeat 10 times and it manages to get funnier still.

But a true "romance" movie it is not and even if I were to concede that it is - is it enough of a romance movie to top those on the list? Uh,...no.

Not a top 10er but I’m sure women the world over fantasized about having their own blonde-haired blue-eyed “poor farm boy”. Consequently, I’m sure many a men the world over were forced to play the role of the poor "naughty" farm boy aka dread pirate Roberts, with ‘as you wish’ becoming one of the most popular bedroom aphorisms of the 90s!

sounds like you have a story or two to tell. But, that's another blog post... ;-)

what about Notting Hill with Hugh Grant? My wife loves that movie. Not so much a comedy.

I love NOtting Hill. I saw your comment and I just had to watch it last night! I like it better than ghost actually (which btw: was not on my list). Something about demi moore and whoopi goldberg lip-locked. *cringe*

Regarding PB...

While I wholeheartedly agree that many would find the witty repartee to be the real star of this movie, for ME (and a number of my friends), its theme of "true love" easily outranks that, putting it way up there with other romance classics.

With that, I'll suggest another. Have you seen A Room With a View? If not, I highly recommend it :-)

A room with a view.. Don't think I've seen it but I'll check it out. I don't know why but I just love period films.

Here are my three:
*Memoirs of a Geisha
*Chocolat
*50 First Dates - I would not have chosen this movie 20 years ago (assuming it had been around). But as I grown older I see that will and determination and commitment have as much to do with love as passion and chemistry.

interesting choices.

RE: 50 first dates..I was thinking about the movie with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler(?). I guess there must be another one since that def wasn't around 20 years ago!

You're thinking of the same movie -- I was trying to express two thoughts with one sentence.

First, I wanted to explain that my criteria has changed as I have grown older: my choices of today are different from what I would have chosen 20 years ago. Back then I would not have chosen 50 First Dates (or a movie like it) as a romantic movie.

Second, I was attempting to acknowledge that this particular movie did not exist 20 years ago.
